A Reply From President Obama to My Letter

President Obama reportedly spent Election Day in The White House behind closed doors.
Apparantly, he is catching up on his mail, as I just got this reply to my letter from him. -Tommy News Thomas

From: The White House – Presidential Correspondence
Thank you for your message

Dear Friend:

Thank you for writing. We must stand united to protect liberty and
justice for all our citizens, and I appreciate your perspective on
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights.

My Administration has taken a number of steps to address issues
affecting the LGBT community. Leading by example, I extended benefits
to same-sex partners of Federal employees in the Civil and Foreign
Services. I also signed a Presidential Memorandum directing hospitals
receiving Medicare and Medicaid funds to give all patients the
compassion and security they deserve in their time of need, including
the ability to choose who can visit them and make medical decisions.
To help take on discrimination in all its forms, we are working to
ensure that core Federal housing programs are open to all, and I
signed landmark legislation that strengthens protections against hate
crimes based on gender identity or sexual orientation. We also ended
the ban on entry to the United States for people living with HIV/AIDS,
and we issued the first comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy.

While we have made great strides, much work remains to achieve full
equality for LGBT individuals. I stand by my commitment to repeal
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and Pentagon leaders are ensuring we can change
this in a way that strengthens our Armed Forces and national security.
I have urged Congress to pass the bipartisan Domestic Partners
Benefits and Obligations Act, and I support extending the over 1,100
Federal marital rights and benefits to same-sex couples. I also
support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, as well as legislative
repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. Adoption rights must also be
secured for LGBT families, and we need to ensure our children are free
to learn in supportive environments in school. For information about
my commitment to preventing bullying and harassment, along with
resources for those facing bullying, visit: www.wh.gov/itgetsbetter.

and tolerant society, please visit:

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

Voting Republican is voting against Civil Rights, against equality. A
Republican-led Congress could obstruct and set back federal LGBT equality for
YEARS. A Republican Governor and State Assembly could prevent civil
rights from passing for YEARS. Please consider your LGBT friends and
family before you vote today. PLEASE remember. PLEASE vote Democrat.
PLEASE pass this on to everyone.

Urgent Message to New York State Voters

Please pass this urgent message on to everyone in your address book.

Democrats took over control of the New York Senate with the 2008 election after decades of obstruction, but that could change Tuesday if we do not get out the vote. On December 2nd, 2009, by a vote of 38 Nays to 24 Yeas, The State Senate Voted Against Marriage Equality. Every single Republican and eight Democrats voted for discrimination. Our need is to defeat and remove all 38 from office, especially Bronx State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr, and GOP Minority Leader Dean Skeltos.

The United States House of Representatives and the US Senate are ibn similar jeopardy, with Republicans trying to regain the House and Senate and return to the failed Bush policies that caused the economic collapse. We must prevent this from happening. This is URGENT!

Please get out and vote Tuesday, bring people to the polls, and vote Democrat!

REMINDER: Get Voters out to the Polls and Pass This On.

Get Voters out to the Polls and Pass This On.
ROCK THE VOTE!

Election day is Tuesday. We have very little time left to make this
important voter turnout drive succeed.

This year is a midterm election, so there is a great deal at stake. The way to get the change we need is to elect the
right leaders. There are many important election contests and
referendums on the ballot.

Every vote counts, and your vote and participation in this voter
turnout drive can make all the difference. It is your civic duty and
your Constitutional right to vote, and your help is needed to get
others out to vote.

If you are registered to vote, please get out and vote Tuesday. If you
are not registered to vote, register now for next year.

Registering to vote is easy and free. You simply fill out a card and
mail it to your local Board of Elections. You can get a form from Rock
The Vote or from your Board of Elections.

Educate yourself. Learn who and what is on your ballot before you go
to the polls. Read the voters guide in your local newspaper or online,
visit the candidate’s websites, and ask like minded people in your
area who they are voting for and why. If they say they are not
voting, please ask them why not and tell them why they should vote!

Dear Rock the Vote Friends,

Recently, Rock the Vote joined with Live Earth as its partner. On
7-7-07, millions of people worldwide experienced Live Earth: The
Concerts for a Climate in Crisis. In doing so, they were making the
commitment to take action against the climate crisis. Besides the
hundreds of thousands of people attending the Live Earth concerts on
seven continents, over 10,000 “Friends of Live Earth’ in 195 countries
participated in house parties to watch the event and at least ten
million more people viewed the concerts online.

Don’t be left behind! Join the millions of people across the world who
have pledged to take action against the climate crisis.

Together, we will solve the climate crisis.

Remember to register to vote because you can’t vote if you’re not
registered! Why is voting important when it comes to stopping the
climate crisis? Well, here are some things to consider:

- The U.S. president inherited a country that makes up less than 5%
of the world’s population but produces nearly a quarter of the world’s
greenhouse gases.

- Legislation regarding environmental issues is crafted by the
lawmakers YOU elect.

- Congress appropriates the funds for the development of clean
renewable energy sources.

- The administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, which has
the legal responsibility to regulate carbon emissions, will be
appointed by the president.

Register now at and tell your friends to register as well.

The future is now. We cannot wait. Together we will make a difference.

Vote! Vote! Vote!

A Letter From our friend Chuck:

VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

Although voting is always important, this November’s election is an unusual one. It has become the thinkers vs. the ignorant.

Many ignorant Americans have simply been duped by big oil, big insurers, big banks and Wall Street, who want to return to the “Wild West,” of no regulations, help the rich get richer, status quo. The GOP/corporate think tanks supply paranoid fearful images of socialist takeovers, Nazi/African plots and push for doing away with things that HELP Americans; like Social Security, the minimum wage and unemployment comp.

THINK about how having no regulations will allow the return of the same predatory banking and Wall Street games that almost destroyed our economy.

THINK about if there were no regulations, we would have no guarantee of clean water, safe food or reliable electricity. If no regulations were in place how safe would flying be?

THINK about the recent SCOTUS ruling that gives incredible power to corporations to flood the media with support for their greedy agenda and drowns out our individual voices.

THINK about the growing gap between the wealthy and the rest of us as jobs and wealth are shipped offshore… as the middle class withers, so to does the american dream.

THINK about the suffering of americans who have lost jobs and health insurance through no fault of their own if the ‘every man for themselves’ agenda of the GOP prevails.

All we have heard from neocons for the last two years is complaining…No ideas, no solutions – just lies and paranoid fear-mongering.

THINK about it!

The GOP created the meltdown, ignored the American people, started unwarranted wars, took us from a $236 billion dollar surplus to $1.3 trillion dollar deficit, and now tells us they are the ones to fix it! Even though they have no plan!

THINK! We now have GOP candidates who believe mice have fully functioning brains; some believe that if a father rapes his daughter, the child should be forced to give birth; they actually claim there is no climate change; they are obsessed with subjects like masturbation and make absurd claims like Sharia law is taking hold in America! In short, the amazing level of ignorance and intolerance in conservative camps is frightening. Like the tea party zealots, most neo cons are only too willing to scream unfounded lies and even when those lies are disproved, they simply continue to repeat the lies… truth, honor, morality, all the things they give lip service to are in truth, completely absent from the new GOP.

These tea party types have vowed to undo the modest changes that have begun and to tie up Congress with partisan investigations. Their tactic of obstruction will continue as they play politics and simply ignore the needs of Americans…just as they have been doing for almost two years.

THINK.

The choices are stark. The GOP wants to return to the status quo. They believe we should remove any safety net for struggling Americans, take away insurance coverage for 30 million Americans and help insurance giants maximize profits. They are anti-gay … anti-immigrant … xenophobic … and all too often racist.

So, if you are one of those who have thrown in the towel already and been cowed by the arrogant boasting of neocons and the doom forecast by most of the media …

THINK!

When you say, “Let them win, they will eventually pay a heavy price!” consider that “they” is really “us!” And, if a heavy price is paid, it won’t just be by “them!” It will be all of us!

LET’S PROVE THE TEABAGGERS AND THE MEDIA WRONG!!! Speak up! Work! Contribute! Most of all, VOTE NOVEMBER 2nd!!!

Take Action for International Coming Out Day: Write Letters to Your Representatives

-by Tommy News Thomas

October 11th is International Coming Out Day. Take Action!

Write letters to and call your representatives asking them to support pro-LGBT legislation. Ask them to support the American Equality Bill Civil Rights Act Amendment to include Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. Ask then to repeal DADT and DOMA, and to pass ENDA and the AEB. Arrange a letter-writing campaign gathering as part of your National Coming Out Day activities. Make paper, envelopes, pens and sample letter language available. Have a gathering and serve some festive snacks and beverages. Fly your rainbow flag and wear rainbow pride gear.

Make a commitment to be honest about your sexual orientation or gender identity to those who know you. Coming out and living openly as a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or supportive straight person is an act of bravery and authenticity. Being brave doesn’t mean that you’re not scared; it means that if you are¬ scared, you do the thing you’re afraid of anyway. Polls continue to show that people who know someone gay are more likely to support full equality.

Please pass this message on to everyone in your address book.

For the last 40 years the LGBTQ community have been the victims of hate crimes, bullying, and inequality. Recently, there has been a influx of reported hate crimes, bias bullying, suicides, and murders where the victims have been LGBTQ. When is enough?

When elected officials and government give Americans the impression that the LGBTQ community are unworthy of equality, dignity, and human rights, Americans believe it.

Our community MUST come out to support, stregthen, and fight for one another. This march is to stand up for our rights and to show that we are not less than. We deserve to be treated with respect and equally. We will not be bullied, we will not be assaulted any longer. We will take back the night. Let’s march and show our strength.

Once at The Stonewall Inn, we will unite and show these haters another “Stonewall Uprising”

Queer Rising’s “NIGHT MARCH: Our Solidarity Agains” March

New York, NY – Queer Rising will hold a “Take Back the Night” march on Saturday October 9 from 8:30-10pm that will begin at W. 25th Street & 9th Avenue and end at the legendary Stonewall Inn. This march will be done in solidarity with all anti-LGBTQ hate crime, suicide, bullying, and murder victims.

This past week, two hate crimes have occurred in New York City. One gay man was assault in bathroom of Stonewall Inn while another gay couple was attacked on the corner of W. 25th and 9th Ave. The march will symbolize the LGBTQ and straight ally’s support, strength, dignity, and demand for equality. We must stand up for our rights and show that we are not less than. We deserve to be treated equally and with respect. We will not be bullied, we will not be attacked any longer. We will take back the night.

Queer Rising member, Eugene Lovendusky, said, “The days of being silent victims have come and gone. No more can members of New York City’s vast gay community be subjected to acts of hate. If those weak-minded bullies think they can prey on our strong gay men and women, they are sorely mistaken. We will fight back and stand our ground.”

Co-founder of Queer Rising and lead organizer for the march, Natasha Dillon, said, “As a LGBTQ community, we have been fighting and demanding equality for 40 years. We are still the victims of hate crimes, bullying, and inequality. When elected officials and the government give Americans the impression that the LGBTQ community is unworthy of equality, dignity, and human rights, Americans act like we are unworthy of equality, dignity, and human rights. Our community must come out to support, strengthen, and fight for one another. We deserve everything we are fighting for.”

Formed in the Winter of 2009, Queer Rising’s mission is to demand queer rights using nonviolent direct action. www.queerrising.org
