BREAKING NEWS Tune in at 12:30 to watch. Follow this link: http://eqfl.blogspot.com/2010/03/breaking-news-florida-house-and-senate.html The bill would prevent people from being asked if they own guns. Our amendment would prevent people from being asked about their sexual orientation. Thanks to Rep Scott Randolph and Sen. Charlie Justice, Equality Florida succeeded in getting amendments filed in both chambers to an adoption bill that heads to the floor of both the House and Senate right now. Right this moment, House and Senate leadership is actively trying to silence the discussion, but top allies in both chambers will fight as hard as they can alongside Equality Florida to ensure that does not happen. Hundreds are in Tallahassee right now talking to leg on the equality issues. Take 30 seconds right now to join them as a virtual lobbyist. Follow this link to send an email to your legislators: http://eqfl.blogspot.com/2010/03/breaking-news-florida-house-and-senate.html Pro-equality legislators are fired up and ready to make the case that the adoption ban tears families apart prevents children from being adopted. More than one hundred Floridians are in Tallahassee right now at Equality Florida’s Lobby Week having face-to-face conversations with their state legislators. Today more legislators than ever are signing on to sponsor pro-equality bills, but more are still needed to pass critical legislation. That’s where you come in…. Write to your lawmaker right and ask them to take a stand against discrimination. Ask them to sponsor three important bills: Repeal of Florida’s Adoption Ban (HB 3 by Brandenburg and SB 102 by Rich) Equality Florida continues to work with legislators to repeal the ban. With approximately 3,000 children waiting for adoption in Florida’s foster care system, the state desperately needs to open up the pool to include qualified gay and lesbian parents. Domestic Partnerships (HB 477 by Steinberg SB 232 by Sobel) This bill would create a statewide domestic partnership policy in Florida. Dozens of cities and companies in Florida already offer some form of domestic partnership benefits, but right now there are no statewide protections for our families. Senator Lieberman has announced that next week, as lead sponsor, he will introduce the legislation into the Senate to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. When he does it is imperative you relentlessly and respectfully flood with phone calls the offices of your Senators. This week, please continue to help spread the word and help us mobilize networks on Facebook and other new media to take part in this important effort to end discrimination in our U.S. Armed forces! This event ONLY asks you to make two 2 quick phone calls next week! Capitol Hill Switchboard: (202) 224-3121 Facebook activists Phil Attey, Meghan Stabler, David da Silva Cornell, Lisa Equality Talmadge, Aaron E. Baldwin, Ian Jopson, Justin Elzie, and Bo Dixon ask for your help in harnessing the power of Facebook and other new media unleashing it on the Senate. Our organizations and our lobbyists aren’t strong enough to make this happen without constituent pressure, and there is no greater way to build that pressure than through each of our individual social networks on Facebook and other new media. Tips on Calling Your Senators: 1. Only call YOUR Senators! (Members of Congress don’t count “outside callers”) Help Spread The Word: 1. Invite your friends to this Facebook event. In addition to calling your senators, we encourage you to plug into these organized efforts to pressure Congress to repeal DADT: Act On Principles Citizen Whip Count Effort Voices of Honor Campaign Servicemembers Legal Defense Network The Courage Campaign’s Don’t Wait Campaign (if there are any other organized efforts to pressure Congress, please let one of us know and we’ll add it to the list.) The form on the email site will ask you for a US state and zip code, you may use Vermont as the state and 05055 as the zip, so the form will accept you. Then in yr note, just say “I am not a US citizen but as a GLBTQI ally I hope you will lift the ban on gays in the military and show the world you are moving towards equality for all” or something like that in yr own words. Thank you for your doing your part to end discrimination in the military and for showing Congress the power of Facebook! Yours in the united stand for equality, Phil, Meghan, David, Justin, Lisa, Aaron, Ian and Bo http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=304676615784&ref=nf
The Florida 2010 Legislative Session will begin in just six weeks and an Appeals Court ruling is expected any day on a Miami judge’s ruling that Florida’s anti-gay adoption ban is unconstitutional. Our opponents know that decisions made in the legislature and in the courts are not made in a vacuum, but are influenced by public opinion. This is why we must educate Florida voters about the harm this adoption ban does to thousands of children being denied the love and stability of a “forever home.” Unless we educate Florida voters on this issue, this discriminatory ban could be permanently enshrined in our laws or even the Florida Constitution. You can make calls right from your home, as long as you have an Internet connection and a phone. Sign up for our Adoption Phone Bank program and we’ll send you information about our next volunteer training. Sign-up to Dial for Equality: http://eqfl.org/adoptequality/
The 2010 legislative session is right around the corner and Equality Florida has been working hard to introduce legislation that will ensure equality for Florida’s LGBT community. To support the passage of these vital bills, Equality Florida will be hosting our annual Lobby Week in Tallahassee so that LGBT and allied Floridians can meet with their legislators and ask them to support pro-equality legislation. If you have a story about not being able to adopt or have an experience with job or housing discrimination, come to Tallahassee March 15-17 and share it with legislators.
