GetEQUAL calls the vote: Fight back against the broken promises

From GetEQUAL.org

Fight back against the broken promises

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Dear friends-

Congress is leaving town at the end of July to go back to their home districts and campaign for re-election. Unfortunately, just this week, the Washington Post reported that the Democratic leadership has no plans to make good on their promises of taking up ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act) when they return in September.

Sadly, we’re not surprised.

Our so-called “friends” in Congress who are stumping for re-election, speaking at our Pride events and addressing our organizational galas have promised passage of ENDA month after month, and year after year. Why are we allowing our “friends” to collect awards and accolades while breaking their promises?

It may not be nice and it certainly won’t get us invited to any fancy Washington cocktail parties, but we aren’t going down without a fight! To us, the silence is deafening and we want you to help us do something about it.

Who do you think we should hold accountable?

  • Should it be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has promised us since May that a vote will happen by the second week of June? [1]

  • Should it be Rep. Barney Frank, who said “we will get this [ENDA] done fairly quickly,” but then called GetEQUAL’s pressuring tactics “immature” and “tacky”? [2]

  • Should it be Rep. George Miller, who heads the House Education and Labor Committee and has said via a spokesperson “he intends to get to it [ENDA] very shortly?” [3]

  • Should it be Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who said that he will “fight hard for the votes to get it passed,” but who has failed thus far to pressure the last few Senators for their votes? [4]

We’re launching direct actions immediately and want to give you the opportunity to decide who is at the top of your list.

Who do you think we should hold accountable?

Get Out!  Get Active!  GetEQUAL!

The GetEQUAL crew

Notes from the SUNDAY AEB CIRCLE, July 11th. FOCUS NOW: SPONSORSHIP HUNT on AOP.

The American Equality Bill – ONE Bill for Equal SO&GI Civil Rights

Notes from Sunday, July 11th, National Phone Gathering.

IN A Hurry SUMMARY:
—Next Circle August 15, Noon, EST.
–Focus now: Sponsorship HUNT – Focus on Your Congress person. Register on AEB Sponsorship Hunt page (http://www.actonprinciples.org/aeb-house/) and let’s find that FIRST Sponsor.
–Focus on YOUR Congressman.
–Join Nationwide Sponsorship Hunt Listserve: [email protected]
–Join – STATE specific Sponsorship HUNT listserves to find local organizers for AEB (see below).
–Focus on your congressman (yes, this is subliminal messaging)
FILING GOAL: November, 2010.

IN HUMAN FORM:

Hey Equality Seekers — all over!

Great call last night. We even had someone on the call from Baghdag! News sure travels fast!

There was great energy. States were represented from all over from VT to CA, FL, NY, UT, IL, D.C., 29 calls registered on the conference call report, but I got bumped and had to call in 3 times, so that’s not a firm number, but close. We spoke in order by STATE, and people hooked up that way, and by interest (like youth organizing, and writing cover letters for the bill).

I personally shared how impatient I am — and that I want to work on this like the barn is on fire and we have to put it out. These are my human rights I’m being denied. My life is ticking by, so I’m in a hurry and AEB is what I want and deserve. No more 2nd class citizenship!

That energy seemed beyond doubt.

FOCUS FORWARD: THE SPONSORSHIP HUNT
A bill has 4 stages: 1. Draft Bill (done, http://bit.ly/AEBJuly4SponsorshipDraft). 2. FILE BILL, 3. Get Votes, 4. Bill Signing.

We’re AT TWO: FILE BILL.

So ALL FOCUS is on the FIRST PRIZE: A BILL SPONSOR. So EACH OF US is going after our OWN Congress person, some more, and groups formed by state to work on their state Senators.

To help people find others working on the AEB Sponsorship Hunt, a listserve for EACH STATE has been set up. The listserves are the same for each state, just put in your state abbreviation. For example, for NY the listserve is: [email protected] Florida is: [email protected], etc.

These are unlocked for your community organizing for the Sponsorship Hunt. If there’s a problem, shout out.

THE OFFICIAL PUBLIC “AEB SPONSORSHIP HUNT LIST” – is on ActOnPrinciples.org.

http://www.actonprinciples.org/aeb-house/
http://www.actonprinciples.org/aeb-senate/

Our friends at ActOnPrinciples.org have created Sponsorship Hunt pages just for the AEB with a list of all the Congress targets and Senate targets. It’s called a “Whip Count” because that’s what they call it in congress when they secretly count the votes to see if they have enough to pass something. They created this tool so WE CAN DO THE COUNTING OURSELVES – in public for all to see, verify or dispute.

This is VOTE COUNTING central once we file the bill. Until then it is “Sponsorship Hunt” Central.

IF YOU ARE WORKING ON YOUR CONGRESS PERSON definitely post your name and join your STATE LISTSERVE so folks can find you (if you want to be found).

LIKE MARY TYLER MOORE : DO IT YOUR WAY

Everyone is encouraged to do their own thing – but all focused on GETTING THAT Congress/Senate SPONSOR. Stop by their office, do a phone zap, sing in front of their office, find their hair dresser, have a Civil Rights March to their office. Let your imagination run wild, but do it with love, not anger. If you’re stuck for ideas, rent Legally Blond and get creative!

CLOSING THE CIRCLE
Toward the end, Chole Nobel tapped into the power of the youth movement as she described how the AEB fits their vision of community organizing. She sent us all off with sweet dreams of equality. It was a great circle.

NEXT CALL: August 15, 2010. This time earlier: NOON ET. We looking into inviting Ed Koch to the call. He’s the former Congressman and Mayor of NYC, who with Bella Abzug in 1974 filed a Gay Civil Rights Bill – like the AEB. It’ll be interesting to find out what happened to that first attempt. Of course, that was then. This is NOW.

FOR NOW: THE SPONSORSHIP HUNT is the FOCUS. You could find the First Sponsor and be part of history. Just print out the bill (http://bit.ly/AEBJuly4SponsorshipDraft) and go to their local office. Bring friends. Keep going back until you get YES.

Keep us posted on the AEB’s Public Whip Count. It’s time to WHIP up a flurry for SO&GI Civil Rights NOW.

JOIN Your fellow Sponsor Hunters and share TACTICS and ANTICS at: [email protected]

FILING GOAL: NOVEMBER 2010. Let’s get this party started!

p.s. I forgot to record the call. So bummed! If you were on it, please add your thoughts here.

New Beginnings Initiative & Task Force FAIL

Shame on the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force for their botched coordination of the New Beginnings Initiative.

New BeginningsPrior to the the 2008 election the Task Force brought together about 20 national and local organizations to provide “low hanging fruit” policy recommendations for the Administration.white_house_pride_event_062909_2_lores

You can read about it here, here, and here.

However, Pam’s House Blend exposed that the list of suggestions to the Administration has now been removed and replaced with a list of the “princess crumbs” provided by the Obama Administration.

If you go to the Task Force’s site today, you’ll see a very different list (below). Only the items where the boxes are checked off. Therefore you don’t see the laundry list of action items this administration hasn’t accomplished. And, of course, that intro paragraph had to change to deflect criticism of inaction.

What happened to asking people to track the original list? Is there a political problem in transparency regarding what was asked of this administration and what has been accomplished?

These administrative changes do not go unnoticed.  They are political maneuvers that only give you, the readers, voters and donors, additional reasons not to fully trust the motives of the organizations supposedly holding our fierce advocate’s feet to the fire. Any good steward of the original list, since it was so carefully crafted, would indeed want to check off those boxes and show people the work left to be done.

It’s called goal-setting, marking milestones and acknowledging where matters fall short, people. All the money spent to craft the list is wasted if there are no visible measures and goals to show this administration has work to do. What’s the point of the NBI if it is truncated to grade on a curve like this?

It’s ironic considering the majority of funding for the initiative is provided by the Open Society Institute.

Shame on the Task Force for wandering so far from its roots of activism and transparency, and accountability.  It’s time to call the Task Force and demand that they place the list of New Beginnings’ suggestions back on its website, and get back on the path set forth by its founders.

American Equality Bill — Sunday Phone Circle July 11th. New SPONSORSHIP HUNT on AOP!! & News GALORE

We had a wonderful call on July 4th for The American Equality Bill. There was a lot of excitement and it felt great. (see news below).

SUNDAY CIRCLE

Tomorrow, Sunday July 11th, at 8 p.m. ET, we’ll gather again by phone. We’ll have some music, share more information about what this AEB project is all about, and open it up so everyone can share their thoughts and action plans.

The idea is to have a weekly call where AEB supporters and organizers can come together to touch base, share inspiration and renew. They’ll be no group decision making and everyone will be encouraged to speak, in the spirit of a radical faerie circle.

Call in numbers: (805) 360-1000 PIN 435689# Everyone’s welcome.

RECENT AEB HAPPENINGS

The first step is finding that first BILL SPONSOR and that happens locally so that’s where the action is for now. It’s like a scavenger hunt for that ONE Sponsor that we’re all on together, but separately.

To empower us so we can ALL see the TARGETS, we have a present from the kind folks at ActOnPrinciples:

The AEB SPONSORSHIP HUNT Whip Count.
ActOnPrinciples.org has created a Sponsorship Hunt Page – YIPPY – where we can keep track of every target Senator and Congress person. (Major Kudos to Donald Hitchcock for this).

Let’s hunt them down and sign them up! Once you’ve snagged a Sponsor – please post it and shout out.

For your bookmarking pleasure:

House: http://www.actonprinciples.org/aeb-house/

The AEB DRAFT BILL is ready to share with Sponsors and anyone you’d like at: http://bit.ly/AEBJuly4SponsorshipDraft.

PLAN: Cast it to the wind and see where it leads. ASK EVERYONE. We need to report back on every district and each senate seat … so we know where we stand. If there’s a primary in play, maybe ask all the candidates?

A smaller circle of folks are already working on a Target List to tackle as a group. More on that soon. Here’s a list to start with if you’re ready to go: http://www.equalitygiving.org/endorsed-candidates

FACEBOOK
The FB page grew from 600s to over 1000 this week :-)

http://bit.ly/AEBnow.

It feels like this is the primary base camp for the AEB project.

Please post discussions, actions, and ideas about finding sponsors there. Art. New logo versions. Your imagination.

ACTIONS & BLOGS for AEB on AOP
The AOP site also allows direct postings of ACTIONS and BLOGS. If you post there, you can give it out as a link and publish via FB etc. You can also post and search by STATE so you can find LOCAL ACTIONS and ORGANIZERS. It takes a bit to get used to the structure – but it’s worth it!

Please post your work on FB and AOP so everyone can see your AEB projects and gravitate to the one’s they’re interested in. (We’re working on an easier way to help local organizers find each other by zip code.).

PLOTTING LISTSERVE
We need a place to plan, plot and conspire. Please stay on topic. [email protected]

Let’s get this party started.
