-by Tommy News We must react loudly. Contact Congress, The Senate, and The White house and express your outrage. Please pass this on to everyone in your address book. Lt Dan Choi’s statement on his discharge My Statement on DADT Discharge This morning I received notification of my honorable discharge from the army under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” After 11 years since beginning my journey at West Point and after 17 months of serving openly as an infantry officer this is both an infuriating and painful announcement. But my service continues. To all those veterans who have endured similar trials and injustices or prematurely ended their military service because of the unjust policy: our fight has only begun. The true honor and dignity of service does not come from a piece of paper, a pension or paycheck, a rank or status; only an unflinching commitment to improve the lives of others can determine the nature of one’s service. From the first moment we put on our nation’s uniform and swore our solemn oath, we committed ourselves to fight for freedom and justice; to defend our constitution and put the needs of others before our own. This is not an oath that I intend to abandon. Doing so at such a time, or remaining silent when our family and community members are fired or punished for who they truly are would be an unequivocal moral dereliction that tarnishes the honor of the uniform and insults the meaning of America. Lt. Dan Choi He includes a link to a Newsweek article that includes more details of the manner it was communicated to him. It also includes this passage: More: We must get mad and fight back, loudly! -by Tommy News The National Organization for Marriage is engaged in a month-long, nationwide “Summer for Marriage Tour 2010: One Man One Woman.” The tour is criss-crossing the east coast, mid-west and Southern states to hold a series of 20 rallies to encourage supporters to stand up against same sex marriage equality. Many of the states they are visiting are the key battlegrounds in this critical civil rights debate. NOM is the anti-gay organization that brought us “The Gathering Storm” video. They helped pass Proposition 8 in California, and they helped defeat Marriage Equality in Maine and other states. Marriage equality and civil rights for LGBT people are under attack by NOM, and we must fight back, Please get out and counter protest at the locations listed below. On Sunday the LGBT community staged a successful counter demonstration in Albany, New York. From The Courage Campaign: Courage Campaign NOM Tour Tracker http://prop8trialtracker.com/2010/07/17/do-you-see-my-love-a-beautiful-gathering-storm-rains-on-noms-parade-in-new-york/ By Eden James Wow. You’ve got to hand it to the equality movement. Our collective response to the NOM Tour just keeps getting better and better with each tour stop. First, the Equality Maine and GLAD organizers of the Maine counter-rally to NOM actually attracted more people to their event than NOM’s kickoff event on Wednesday (102 to 76 by our hand-count). Then the New Hampshire counter-rally organizers held a brilliant “silent witness” event across the street from the Manchester event on Thursday. And now the amazing Albany organizers, led by several wonderful organizations, have taken counter-protesting to a whole new level, surrounding the NOM event with one of the most brilliant actions I have ever seen. Check out the gathering storm of rainbow umbrellas held aloft by equality movement activists silenting protesting NOM while asking a simple question adorned to their t-shirt: “Do you see my love?” Photos Here: NOM Executive Director Brian Brown (above) doesn’t look too happy, does he? How could he? It’s fair to say that Albany turned into yet another NOM FAIL, due to the beauty of creative counter-protest and the paltry NOM attendance (Danny hand-counted 57 attendees). Courage staffers Danny and Robert will be writing up their reports later, but for now, take note of this Albany protest. One thing is for sure — local organizers at subsequent counter-protests are going to have a hard time topping this poignant and powerful action. Can’t wait to see what they can do. Again, here are the amazing organizations that made this counter-protest possible today (from a press release): Marriage Equality New York http://prop8trialtracker.com/2010/07/17/do-you-see-my-love-a-beautiful-gathering-storm-rains-on-noms-parade-in-new-york/ Upcoming NOM Tour Stops to Protest http://www.marriagetour2010.com/tour/ Trenton, New Jersey Annapolis, Maryland Columbus, Ohio Lima, Ohio Indianapolis, Indiana Madison, Wisconsin Saint Paul, Minnesota Saint Cloud, Minnesota Rochester, Minnesota Des Moines, Iowa Sioux City, Iowa St. Louis, Missouri Atlanta, Georgia Tampa, Florida Raleigh, North Carolina Charleston, West Virginia Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Washington, DC Source: Follow the Prop 8 Tracker Blog Here: http://prop8trialtracker.com/
Pro-equality Senatorial Candidate Alexi Giannoulias has launched a web-based petition to repeal DADT. It’s very easy to sign up. He is seeking the seat Obama vacated, currently held by an appointee, Roland Burris, who is retiring. The race is rated a pure tossup. Visit his website: http://alexiforillinois.com/blog/giannoulias-calls-immediate-repeal-dadt-launches-equalitycantwaitcom and give what you can. We need allies like him in the Senate! http://www.equalitycantwait.com/o/5932/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1797
