Since 1969, the LGBT community has been a political force to be reckoned with. We have numbers, money, and the organizations to move our politicians to support LGBT equality and oppose anti-LGBT legislation. Unfortunately, we often find ourselves, as the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell vote proved, in a place of compromise for the greater good, and our organizations and leadership have often step down from holding our elected officials accountable. History shows that we will again be asked to remain quiet as we face the upcoming 2010 mid-term elections for the opportunity to retain control of the House and Senate. I ask that we do not. Hello Activists Agitators! Yesterday a Petition was launched to stop the harmful lobbying by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and Nat. Association of Evangelicals. FOR CONTEXT AND TO SIGN AND SEND: GO TO: http://www.change.org/petitions/view/halt_the_harm_-_stop_advocacy_by_usccb_and_nae_causing_harm_to_lgbt_community This petition draws a NEW line in the sand. Previously, we’ve argued that the church has no right to be involved in government – using the “separation of church and state” concept. Personally I don’t read the Constitution that way.* To me it says the US Government can not “establish” a religion. That doesn’t mean that religious groups are not allowed to participate in the public and social debate, even legislative. So, this petition takes a new angle. The NEW LINE is that religious groups SHOULD NOT be advocating against basic human rights and dignity UNDER THE CONSTITUTION(s), because this advocacy causes a DIRECT HARM to our peoples and VIOLATES the social compact. It’s a matter of mutual civic responsibility. Just as we would defend their rights, they must not undermine ours. Although this argument could extend to their teachings in the pulpit, that ground is arguably off limits in legislative contexts, because they are free to preach as they choose. That is guaranteed along with the right of free speech and freedom of assembly (see below). So for now, the clear message is: STOP LOBBYING AGAINST OUR HUMAN RIGHTS under OUR Constitution and Laws in OUR Legislatures. Check it out… and please repost & spread the word. The Audacious Religious Opposition has gone unchallenged too long. Rising UP, * “Amendment I to the Constitution: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
