This time, the the call from HRC is to “Repeal DADT now. Not tomorrow. Not next year. Now.” One can only hope that HRC will challenge the Democratically controlled Congress and President Obama to deliver their promises to repeal DADT. If they do, HRC will help the movement greatly.
It is time for some accountability for our Democratic friends, and I’m hopeful that HRC is starting down that road. If not, HRC might find itself to blame as clearly articulated by John Aravosis from AmericaBlog.
So where is HRC, which told us that everything was on track just two weeks ago, even though SLDN, Nathaniel Frank from the Palm Center, Senator Levin, Barney Frank and staffers in the House and Senate all have now publicly said that the administration isn’t showing the leadership it needs to show on DADT repeal? Everything is not on track, and groups like HRC and the Center for American Progress, which we only recently learned has been at the center of HRC’s “work” on this issue in the guise of their staffer Winnie Stachelberg (a former HRC staffer), are going to be held accountable if they continue to claim that everything is going well while the White House so obviously undercuts the effort to repeal DADT. It’s almost as if HRC and CAP are intentionally lying to America’s gay community and our straight allies, trying to convince us that everything is moving ahead swimmingly, when they know it’s not. That would be an unfortunate turn of events for both organizations, and their donors.

Giving something a title, does not make it a campaign. A campaign involves a plan, and for it to be a community campaign we need to know what the plan is (and ideally, be involved in making the plan). I’ve received 2 emails from HRC in the last couple weeks, both fundraising, and both silly. That is a plan alright, but not to repeal DADT or pass ENDA. It’s the HRC survival plan. By contrast, Nat. Cent. for Transgendered Equality is having 3 days of ENDA work in DC, Reform. Immigration for America is having a national march in DC, and Health Care for America just had a phone bank campaign that has exceeded 1.5 million calls in two days. None of those groups have asked me for money. When you have a plan – you don’t have to ask for money.
Dear HRC~ Are you kidding? Is this what you call “leadership”? Is THIS how you apply pressure? If so, maybe this is why you have taken such a back burner, enjoy the moments of access approach to demanding our President and legislators show leadership. Or, maybe this is why you allow President Obama to only use empty rhetoric to apply pressure. Give me a break – “Repeal DADT now. Not tomorrow. Not next year. Now.” – and, if not, what do you plan to do about it? I’m sure the White House got a huge chuckle out of this threat. Please, tell me you know pressure has to include ACTION!?!
I’m curious – why just DADT? Where is the demand for the passage of an all inclusive-ENDA? Where is the repeal of DOMA? Where is the passage of UAFA or strong messaging about comprehensive immigration reform that includes the countless binational couples who suffer from the confides of another closet they are required to suffer in because of their undocumented love? What about the other countless protections that are offered on the federal level that we will be slow to receive, if ever, at this rate?
I am SICK of the LACK of representation your organization provides and I am saddened by the true potential your organization does not capitalize on while you recklessly spend millions of dollars – all the while, BRANDING YOURSELF as our protector.
If this is protection? I’d like to just use my kid’s security blanket – it’d probably offer just as much defense.
HERE! HERE! A NEW HRC NOW – not tomorrow, not next year – NOW!
If you’re going to put the pressure on then just do it and stop talking about it. Sometimes putting the pressure on means that you might have to be just a bit on the annoying side. The squeaky wheel really does get the grease. These are not times when the “nicey-nice” approach will do. What’s that saying? – S*** or get off the pot.

So far the messages left here are my same feelings!! YOU, HRC, have our money NOW give us some action we can ALL react to. There are far more inclusive items on the table than Just DADT! As a defender of Human Rights I want it all!! I’m entitled to it ALL NOT just a smidgen one at a time every few years!! NOW is the key word. AND folks check out Charity Navigator to see exactly where our money goes to:
