The site Queer New York has a great posting written by Brooklyn Bill following last night’s civil disobedience training at the New York LGBT Community Center. Here are a few short blurbs:
You can read the entire posting here.
TAKE ACTION: Complain To CBS About Superbowl Ads; CBS and Its Homophobic Superbowl Double-Standard. Tell CBS Not To Air the hateful Tim Tebow Anti-Abortion Advocacy Ad and Replace it with the funny Mancrunch Gay Dating Ad they rejected or you will boycott the Superbowl, CBS, and it’s sponsors. From The Huffington Post: So fine, CBS, show the ad. Even though you have a history of rejecting advocacy ads, even though it might upset some of your audience, let’s do it — we’re a nation of grownups, and it’s 2010. We can handle it, right? This is the point where I punch a wall — because apparently that only applies to pro-life ads featuring handsome football players wearing Bible-verse makeup. CBS has REJECTED the scary Mancrunch ad featuring two football fans realizing they leurve each other and making out furiously. It’s true! It’s too hot for TV! Apparently the network that thought it was okay to have Frosty the Snowman talking about his PORN COLLECTION gets all squirmy when confronted with two schlubby dudes touching hands in the chip dish and then going in for the smooch (and by the way, for the fakest, spoofiest most non-lip-touching smooch ever. Hello all, Tom Tierney (an activist with Out4Immigration) and I have put together a plan (C=IIR) for grassroots activists to promote UAFA and to rally support for its inclusion in Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR). UAFA (The Uniting American Families Act) will allow Americans with foreign-born partners to sponsor them for a green card, essentially creating an “immigration domestic partnership” status. CIR will correct an inhumane immigration system for all. Together they will end suffering for millions. We are working in close coordination with both Out4Immigration and Immigration Equality, as well as other groups. Now all we need is a groundswell of activists. It’s all described in detail in this document: READ PLAN at: http://tinyurl.com/CIIR2010-TenStatePlan If you live in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Illinois OR New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Washington – you’re in one of the 10 target states (there’s lots of info here for you). If you are involved in the marriage equality struggle – this has the same opposition (and we’re focusing on that on page 6). If you are an activist – we have roughly 600,000 LGBT youth and adult immigrants harshly affected by the current system, and over 36,000 LGBT Americans in bi-national couples who live in great uncertainty, most afraid to even speak up for fear of arrest or forced separation. If you have a voice – these are our voiceless and our minorities – and they need one. With this plan, activists anywhere can act individually, with local groups, or in coordination with us. However you choose, please let us know of your success (and any resistance you encounter). Please take a look at the plan, share this, and Join us on facebook at: http://tinyurl.com/CIIRonFB The Immigration Community has declared that 2010 is their year. We plan to arrive together. Rising UP! Tif p.s. Monitor and report OUR progress on UAFA with ActonPriniciples at: http://tinyurl.com/CIIR2010-TenStatePlan
What would an LGBT equality conference in Dallas be without a discussion of the Dallas Principles, and its call for full immediate civil rights for LGBT Americans? Several Dallas Principles authors and champions will be on hand to introduce the Principles and demonstrate the groundbreaking online equality toolset available only at ActOnPrinciples.org. Currently planning to be in attendance: John Bare, Mike Rogers, Donald Hitchcock, Mandy Carter, Todd “TIF” Fernandez, Andy Szekeres. The session will take place Friday February 5 at 4:45 PM in the Grand Hall (outside the Dallas Ballroom). If you are at Creating Change 10, please stop by. If you can’t make it to Dallas, you can still get in on the excitement by following our tweets @ActOnPrinciples . We’ll show the unique contribution that TDP and AOP make in advancing equality. We’ll also show that while there are hundreds of LGBT organizations, websites, blogs, and listserves, only Act On Principles offers a one stop shop where the entire community can share their insights, strategies, and action alerts, and have them immediately shared via twitter, Facebook, and daily email. For the first time, organizations and individuals are on a level playing field so that every voice can be heard, every idea considered, and every sleeve rolled. We’ll also demonstrate our groundbreaking whip count tools where every individual can not only look up where their representatives stand on LGBT equality bills — but even be empowered to help change their hearts and minds and share the results with the community. Act On Principles empowers citizen activists to take charge of their own personal call for full immediate civil rights and take the legislative process out of the closet — for good!
Sometimes we have to speak truth to power, often leading others into a place of discomfort and deepened understanding of the issues of LGBT oppression. Queer Rising a new non-violent civil disobedience group from New York City is doing just that. Here is a video of a recent action that they did on Martin Luther King, Jr Day where they went to popular places in NYC to spread their message. What would it look like if thousands of us did the same thing across the country?
From Truth Wins Out: We are about to embark on a historic mission to stop persecution of LGBT people in Uganda and we want you to be a key part of our vision. On February 4th, we are launching The American Prayer Hour. It is a multi-city affirmation of inclusive values and a celebration of diversity. It is also an action to protest the sponsors of The National Prayer Breakfast, which will take place on February 4 in Washington, DC. While The National Prayer Breakfast is ostensibly a benign event, it is hosted by a secretive fundamentalist organization, The Family, which is directly tied to the draconian “Kill the Gays” bill in Uganda. We strongly urge those invited to the National Prayer Breakfast to reconsider attending the event. Instead, they can join us at our American Prayer Hour. The American Prayer Hour will be anchored by events in the following cities: * Dallas—Creating Change (Sheraton Dallas – Dallas Ballroom A) Get Involved There are four ways to get involved: 1. If you live in a city where an American Prayer Hour event is already occurring, please consider attending. www.americanprayerhour.org
