Task Force says: Queer the Census

From the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force:

We know it’s a little clichéd – but here’s what we want to tell the census: We’re here. We’re queer. And we want you to ask us about it.QueerTheCensus

It’s crazy – the U.S. Census Bureau wants an accurate count of everyone in the country – but there’s no question in the survey that asks if you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

You read that right: LGBT people are basically invisible in the survey that is supposed to reflect the diversity of America’s population – and that’s a big problem.

The data collected impacts issues critical to every American – like our health care, our economic stability, and even our safety. And when LGBT people aren’t counted, then we also don’t count when it comes to services, resources … you name it.

It’s past time to Queer the Census! Sign the petition at right to demand that the census ask the question and count everyone!

Urgent Action Alert: Help Get Marriage Equality Passed in New Jersey

Urgent Action Alert: Help Get Marriage Equality Passed in New Jersey

-by Tommy News

We only have a few days to get Marriage Equality passed in New Jersey
before Anti-gay Governor-elect Chris Christie takes office on January
19th. Christie has pledged to veto this legislation. Governor Corzine
has pledged to sign Marriage Equality legislation if it reaches his
desk before he leaves office.

Time is running out fast. Please contact New Jersey Legislators by
phone, fax, email, web form, and postal mail today and tomorrow! You
do not need to live in New Jersey to do this. Please take action and
pass this urgent message on to everyone in your address book.

Marriage offers 1,138 Federal benefits and responsibilities, not
including hundreds more offered by every state. The failure of New
Jersey’s civil union law is having devastating real-world
consequences. Loving couples and children are denied equal protection
under the law. Nothing less than full civil marriage equality will
guarantee equal civil rights.

Gov. Jon Corzine, a Democrat, has said he would sign a law to legalize
gay marriage. But time is running out. He’s to be replaced on Jan. 19
by Gov.-elect Chris Christie, a Republican who says he’d veto the
bill.

Lawmakers could technically approve a law by noon Jan. 19 and see it
signed. But given the Legislature’s schedule, it would probably have
to happen by Jan. 11 if the bill is to be passed.

“We at Garden State Equality are often asked whether we’re a
multi-issue LGBT civil rights organization, or a marriage equality
organization. We are both. To be sure, we work on every civil rights
issue facing the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex
community. But because New Jersey has won a sweeping range of LGBT
civil rights laws except for marriage equality, marriage equality has
become our signature issue.”
